Today internet users are aware of their website, databases & information’s security needs and to protect it all SSL Certificate is the best available option. SSL secures the communication held between browser and server, which means any information (text, password, images, file) transmitted over internet (between browser and server) can be secured with SSL certificate. SSL is called as bridge between browser and server to secure information. Mainly 3 types of SSL certificates are available.
As data breaches, cyber-attacks, malware attacks, etc. are increasing use of SSL certificate became mandatory. Not only e-commerce stores, but social media networks, news/blog publishing files, banking sectors, health care sectors, government platforms, small/medium level businesses required SSL Certificate to secure their user’s private information.
Different Types of SSL Certificates
- Extended Validated SSL certificate
- Organization validated SSL Certificate
- Domain validated SSL Certificate (Standard SSL)
Video Tutorial – Types of SSL Certificates
Extended Validated SSL Certificate
(aka EV SSL): EV SSL Certificate is the most recommended SSL type, which displays green address bar including business name in URL which indicates the business is legitimate and the information being shared is not been accessible by others. It delivers highest encryption up to 256-bit which increases user’s trust and confidence and they can share their information without any fear of data loss which helps to increase business revenue as well.
To issues an EV SSL certificate, the issuer need to submit important business documents as per certificate authority’s requirement. Read our EV SSL certificate document requirement guideline for more information. It takes up to 10 days to issue an EV SSL Certificate.
Organization Validated SSL Certificate
(aka OV SSL): Organization validated SSL is highly recommended to validate an online business, it delivers up to 256-bit encryption length and supported with 99.9% web and mobile browsers. Business name is displayed in certificate and it also comes up with free seal which are considered as trust indicators.
To issue an Organization validated SSL certificate, issues need to submit business documents as per the requirement of certificate authority. Read our OV SSL Certificate document requirement guider for more information. It takes up to 3 days to issue an OV SSL.
Domain Validated SSL Certificate
(aka DV SSL): Domain validated SSL certificate is suggested to validate the domain name only. If a user carries a small/medium level website, DV SSL certificate is the best option. Unlike OV & EV SSL, a DV SSL certificate can also deliver up to 256-bit encryption strength. SSL certificate authority can ask for email verification, file bases verification, or check website’s web registrar’s information to validate a domain.
SSL Certificate comes up with two most important feature as
- SAN/ Multi-domain
If a user with to secure his website along with multiple fully qualified domain name under single SSL certificate then SAN/Multi-domain helps to make it possible. Here the first domain works as base domain (E.g www.domain1.com) and the other domains works as SAN (Subject Alternative Name) (E.g www.domain2.com, domain3.net, info.domain1.com, etc…). SAN/Multi domain SSL Certificate is available with Domain validation, Organization validation and Extended Validation. A Single Multi domain SSL certificate can secure up to 100 domains.
If a user with to secure his domain name along with multiple sub-domains under a single certificate, Wildcard SSL feature will make it possible. It can secure the base domain and unlimited number of first level sub-domains. Wildcard SSL Certificate is available with Domain validation and Organization validation.
SSL Certificate also comes up with other features as
Unified Communication Certificates (UCC)
These certificate feature is produced to secure Microsoft Exchange server and Microsoft Office Communication server. It works same as the Multi Domain SSL certificate as we’ve described above. It can secure base domain along with multiple fully qualified domain names (up to 25 to 100) depends on Certificate Authority.
Multi Domain Wildcard Certificate
These certificates allows user to secure multiple domain names along with their unlimited number of sub-domains. It is available in both domain validation and organization validation options.
